Tattooing is an ancient practice spanning the globe and civilizations. More than decoration, tattoos have been used to denote status, connections, and symbolism significant to the individual or their community. A prolific and varied practice, tattooing is an art form that adorns and incorporates the body itself.
This call seeks art focusing on representing the images, history, symbolism, or significance of tattoo. We welcome works that explore tattoo culture from multiple perspectives: the intimate relationship between artist and canvas, the permanence of ink as commitment and memory, the reclamation of marked bodies throughout history, or the evolution of techniques from hand-tapped traditions to contemporary electric innovation.
Artists may choose to examine tattoos as cultural heritage, personal narrative, social rebellion, or living archive. Works might engage with the ritual aspects of tattooing, its role in identity formation and transformation, or its position at the intersection of fine art and folk tradition. We encourage submissions that honor both the sacred and the subversive nature of this enduring practice, celebrating tattoos as simultaneously individual and communal, ephemeral and eternal.
All media are welcome, including but not limited to photography, painting, sculpture, video, installation, and mixed media works.
This will also be our first show in our new gallery location 410 Chestnut St, Manchester, NH 03101
