About This Work
American Western merges the visual language of Western Americana with military iconography, examining the space between identity and uniformity. Military name tapes, once functioning as markers of individual identity, are removed from their original garments and reassembled into a fringe that spans the back of this worn military shirt. The fringe draws from garments throughout American history—first appearing on Indigenous buckskin clothing before being adopted and reimagined in Western wear. The result is a garment that blends two distinctly American traditions while exploring how clothing preserves both personal and collective histories.
