This is an engraving done on a thrifted glass mirror. The technique is similar in some ways to tattooing, as it requires a steady hand and high contrast for legibility. I chose cherry blossoms, recognized in tattooing and japanese art as a symbol of growth and fleeting life in addition to an animal skull and some ornamentals to represent the spring season, and the cycle of growth and rebirth. *Note photos are taken from an angle because the mirror is difficult to photograph head on without creating distraction from the work!
I draw most of inspiration as an artist from the natural world - botanicals, animals and more. I also love magic, fantasy and adding a touch of whimsy or ornamentation to my work. A lot of my style inspiration comes from art historical movements such as Romanticism and Art Nouveau. These styles speak to me because they appeal so strongly to emotions and feeling. As both a body artist and a fine artist, my goal is to use my vision and style to illustrate my subjects in a way that provokes those emotions and feelings through careful attention to details. I pay extra attention to flow, earthy rich color palettes and contrast in my work. I hope to both bring people’s ideas to life in permanence on skin, and continuously dispute the taboo of body art by creating work that has the same delicacy and prestige of other fine art forms.
